YOUR PROJECT:

Explore the historical architecture in your community by photographing selected building features.

Students will complete the project individually. Take a friend along when you take the pictures.

Read through the glossary for descriptions and study the architectural features in the Measured Drawings.

Choose one of the following assignments for your project.

  1. Pick three architectural features. Take two pictures of each feature. The features can be different features of the same kind on one building, or the same feature taken from different buildings. Use the glossary to help you identify the building features.
  2. Take three groups of pictures of the same architectural feature found on different buildings. Try to find two to four examples for each group.
  3. Pick some modern urban architectural features and take a series (three each) of pictures of your artifact. Look for neon signs, graffiti, old wooden signs, drive-in or old theater signs, etc. Use your imagination!
  4. Have you ever noticed how many of the most beautiful and interesting buildings have familiar shapes, patterns and designs which seem to originate in the natural world? Take a picture of an architectural feature then compare it to a shape, design or pattern found in nature.

HAND-IN ASSIGNMENT
  1. Where is the building located?
  2. What type of building is it?
  3. Write a brief description of the architectural feature.
  4. Write a brief (one paragraph) architectural description of the building. Try to incorporate the terminology found in the glossary.

HELPFUL HINTS:

  • Take along the glossary definitions when you go out looking for building features.

  • Look in architectural books for examples of sample features. There are many excellent bibliographic sources listed in the bibliography.
