Benefits to Aboriginal Communities

atvrule.gif (180 bytes)

The Government of Canada has committed itself to working toward increased self-government for First Nations. A key element of self-government is control over one's own resources. Communities must diversify their economic resource base and negotiate new fiscal arrangements with the Canadian government. The role of the individuals managing such a process is immense.

EDOs have a very important role in their communities. CANDO certification will ensure that all EDOs have the necessary skills and knowledge to fulfill the requirements of their position most effectively.

Certification will also allow communities to hire members who are familiar with the history and the norms of the community, rather than outside consultants. CANDO certification will also assist Aboriginal leaders to better understand the EDO's role.  Because of the push towards self-government and increased self-sufficiency, people who really understand their communities and economic development are needed to work as EDOs.
