This
area was well known for welcoming settlers. People came from
all over the world. Some came for the money to be made, for
a homestead and some people heard that Saskatchewan was a good
place to make a decent start. This was a "promised land" full
of opportunities. Saskatchewan was one of the many areas offering
a wide variety of new technologies and types of equipment. Different
types of transportation were available. People moved to Saskatchewan
because of its rich soil. Many services were offered to the
public, such as schools, churches and medical care. Business
opportunities were made readily available as towns sprang up
all over the prairies. This was a perfect place to start a new
homestead and farm for a living.![Homesteaders coming to the prairies.](pics/oxen.jpg)
People
came to Saskatchewan from many different parts of the world:
Eastern Canada, Europe and the United States. Homesteaders most
often arrived in wagons pulled by teams of oxen or horses. They
arrived with very little money, tools, or equipment. Any person
who was over the age of eighteen, who was the head of a family,
could make an application for a homestead.
