There
was ferocious rivalry between the railway companies around 1910.
The two companies were the Canadian Northern Railway (which later
became the Canadian National Railway) and the Canadian Pacific Railway.
They had their construction crews competing to build across the
West. While the CNR crew was working west from Maryfield toward
Radville and Moose Jaw the CPR was pushing from Estevan toward Axford
on their Weyburn-Lethbridge line. The CNR was victorious and the
CPR was cut off at Neptune. The CPR survey called for a line that
would have crossed what is now the northern part of the Larsen Dam
and on toward the northwest.
