One of the earliest pioneers of the Pacific Coast, John Fredrick Kennedy was born in 1805, educated in Scotland and obtained his Medical Degree in Edinburgh. With his training he obtained a medical position with the Hudson's Bay Company, which he held for upwards of 20 years.
He was posted at various forts throughout the province including Fort Rupert, Fort Simpson, and Fort Nisqually. He was regarded as "careful, attentive, and qualified to act as trader, storekeeper, and accountant, in addition to his medical duties" by Peter Ogden. Bound for Fort Victoria to retire, according to James Douglas's original Fort plans(drawn in 1843) he resided within the fort but moved soon after. He became a member of the House of Assembly, representing Nanaimo where he resided until his death in April of 1859.
