" A belfry and a bell which stood in the fort yard called everyone to work, tolled for the dead, loud tongued for a wedding and solemnly for church; but the dogs knew the time without a clock, for they assembled, squatted on their haunches and with head up, howled all the time it rang.
At night, too generally moonlight, they would have a special concert occasionally and then the dogs in the indian village would join in, and it is said the tune and song would be taken up by all the dogs from Camosun to Sitka.
This was the Victoria band - no other musical instrument existed, save Mr. Todd's fiddle and flute."
