Susannah Moody's children

"...From Indians fishing on the shore we sometimes obtained a few herrings by trading a pocket handkerchief or other unconsidered trifle and from the Company's fields we occasionally when opportunity offered, appropriated some potatoes. With these articles of luxury we would have a grand corrobboree on the sea beach where we would start a fire with flint and steel; cook the potatoes in the ashes and other things before the fire. How we enjoyed those stolen al fresco meals in spite of the fact that in all likelihood the food was only partially cooked. Sometimes we obtained strings of dried clams or dried salmon or Sallal cakes from the natives either by trade or as gifts."
