"...He married the second daughter of the late
Captain Reid by whom he had a numerous family. He sat for
Victoria in the Legislative Council of British
Columbia in 1867 and was called to the Senate of
Canada in 1871. After leaving the service of the
Hudson's Bay Co. he carried on business of his own
account for some years and was elected a Municipal
Councilman for the city of Victoria for one term and
Mayor for two terms.
Mr. Macdonald was in the public service practically
for 55 years, viz, as Gold Commissioner, Collector of
Customs for a short time in 1858, Captain of Militia
in 1857, school Commissioner and Road Commissioner,
besides the other positions described above.
Mrs. Macdonald died in April 1914, after which
Mr. Macdonald ceased on that account, and from his
declining years, to take an active part in public
life. He retired from the Senate in 1915."
