COST OF OPERATION OF ELECTRIC LIGHT PLANT IS EXCESSIVE

A regular meeting of the town council was held on Monday evening, Mayor Yoerger in the chair and Couns. Pike, Russell, Watson and Telfer present.

Westminster Church Lease Hall
Messrs. R. J. Kepkey and A. L. MacLean waited on the council with a request for the use of the town hall for church services by Westminster church, stating that the church was willing to pay $5.00 per Sunday for a period of six months. The council discussed the matter freely and a motion was finally passed that the request be granted.

Auxiliary Electric Light Equipment
The council has had under consideration for some time the question of installing an auxiliary electric light equipment in the power house, with the idea of reducing the cost of operation of the plant. It has been figured out that a plant of much smaller capacity than the present one will carry the load except possibly for a few hours in the evening, which would mean a great saving in fuel and oil. When the load is too heavy for the small plant the present one could be turned on. The town would also a avoid the danger of being in darkness at any time when one engine or generator happened to require repairs. With this object in view the superintendent has been securing prices on the machinery required, and at this meeting submitted a quotation from Bolton, Ont., where the equipment has been in operation for four years, but is not now in use, as the town was using the hydroelectric. They offered the generator, switch board and exciter for $550.00 the terms of payment to be spread over ten months.

After considerable discussion the council

decided to accept the proposition and the matter was referred to the fire, water and light committee, with power to act.

The council some time ago secured an option on the engine in the Kerr & Adams mill at a price of $500.00, which will make the total cost of the new equipment $1050.00.

The superintendent stated that he thought the payments could be so arranged that the revenue from the plant would meet them as they became due and in this way the equipment would in a short time pay for itself.

Contract For Water and Sewer Connections
Tenders were received for the work of laying house sewer and waterworks services, and the tender submitted by Flanagan & Murphy was accepted.

Equipment For Ejector Station
Quotations were submitted for the supplying of the equipment for the sewerage ejector station including one air receiver, air compressor and one ejector, and the following were accepted: From the Canadian Allis Chalmers Co. one air receiver, price $143.00. From the Canadian Westinghouse Company, one air compressor price $138.00, f. o. b. Hamilton. From Shone Company one sewage ejector, price $1407.50. f. o. b. Humboldt.

New Water Tank
The water man complained that his water tank, used for town delivery, had become unfit for use, and the committee was empowered to purchase a new one, if necessary.

Report of chief of police for month of August was accepted.
