  Community Involvement

Kensington Market has a history of community involvement in causes that affected them:

• The Labour Lyceum was opened in 1925 as a home for unions and the socialist movement.
• In 1933 people marched across College Street and Spadina to Queen’s Park to protest the rise of anti-Semitism in Germany.
• In 1937 people participated in anti-war demonstrations.
• The UNIA (United Negro Improvement Association), opened as a centre for activists working to improve the lives of Black people.
