The De Gannes Residence

The De Gannes house was constructed in the basic piquet style. To support the walls, posts were placed in a trench and packed with earth and fieldstone. For further support, horizontal planks were nailed to the posts. The house was disproportionate, as none of the corners were true right angles.

The house was 38 feet 3 inches in length by 25 feet 4 ½ inches in width and had two floors. The ground floor consisted of the kitchen, bedroom, and two small rooms. The first floor had two rooms and one small loft. Food supplies were stored upstairs, in the cellar, and in the small room off the bedroom. In 1744, the De Gannes couple slept in the main floor bedroom with an infant, born that spring, sleeping nearby in a cradle. The other children, four girls and one boy from ages three to thirteen slept in the small rooms on the first and second floors.
