The Des Roches House

no

noThe Des Roches house was situated on the Fauxbourg waterfront, just beyond the Dauphin Gate. It was a domestic piquet style building with the eaves of the sodded roof overhanging the walls of the house. This was a traditional style reflecting their Basque culture. The spaces between the posts were caulked with heavy plaster which likely contained pebbles and mussel shells. The size of this house was 27 feet in length by 14-15 feet in width. The cost for a house of this size and style construction was 120 livres.

Inside this building could be found a fire place on the east and west walls with approximately seven tables between them. There was also a room for salting cod and a bedroom for the Des Roches couple.

The final destruction of this building occured just before the second siege of the fortress.
