B.C. F ERRIES

The traffic flow between Vancouver Island and the mainland was paralyzed in 1958 with the strikes that hit the Canadian Pacific and Black Ball ferry companies. This problem prompted Premier Bennett to create a ferry system that would be government-owned a nd operated.

The service between Swartz Bay and Tsawwassen began in 1960 with the ferries Sidney and Tsawwassen which were built by Victoria Machinery Depot and Versatile Pacific. Since then, B.C. Ferries has developed into one of the largest and most advanced ferry systems in the world.
