Elizabeth Beattie

Elizabeth Beattie
In 1914, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Beattie arrived in Gold Bar. Here, they raised a large and friendly family. There was Louise, Mary, Clarisse, Bob, Olive, Ruth and the twins Jim and Bill. Referring to the arrival of the children, Mrs. Beattie comments that somehow her husband always managed to get home in time for the births.

They established a productive farm where Mrs. Beattie and the older girls worked hard. Because their home was located 34 miles from town, she would often harness the team and travel to town for mail and supplies. Between harvesting and seeding seasons, Elizabeth would move into town with the children while they attended school. Mrs. Beattie herself never had any formal education but was able to supervise her family's schooling by correspondence.

After Jim's death, Mrs. Beattie and the twins continued to work the form at Gold Bar until their land was flooded by the Peace River Dam. She then moved to town where she kept busy with planting and gardening, Because her memory was excellent, she was always ready and willing to share her memories.
