Nora Apasassin

Nora Apsassin
Nora (Thoma) was born on May 12, 1912 in the Dawson Creek area. During her childhood she received her 'formal' education from her mother. After her father's death in 1914 her family moved to Arras on the Kiskatinaw (Cut Bank) River.

When Nora was 18 she married Edward Apsassin from the Fort St. John Beaver Band. Edward was the son of Councillor Joseph Apsassin. The couple travelled by foot or horse team. They had fourteen children and only one was born in a hospital while the rest were born in the bush without medical assistance.

During the summer Nora, Edward and the children would usually stay in the Montney area. The summer was the busiest time of the year for Nora because she had to get food preserved and other things organized and ready for the coming winter. Nora would pick berries such as saskatoons, blueberries, and cranberries. She would preserve the berries by smashing them on a cloth and letting them dry. The dried berries would then flake into small pieces that could be stored for months. She would also be busy drying moose meat and tanning hides to make mocassins, coats and other necessities. When winter was approaching the family would travel by horse team to Nig Creek where they would trap for the rest of the season and prepare furs. Nora would set traps for rabbits and squirrels in the vicinity of their village at Nig Creek.
