THE OKANAGAN LAKE MONSTER

August 1969: Connie W. Marlow and Doreen Belleau, both of whom worked at the Chamber of Commerce office on Kelowna bridge, saw what they described as "a great eel-like writhing mass in the water" to the North. This might have been a sighting of two creatures at one time, possibly in mating display. This was Connie Marlow's second sighting of Naitaka.

August: Eleven year old Danny Fink of Edmonds, Washington, U.S. saw Naitaka while fishing off Kelowna. He called to his father Donald Fink, and grandfather Anton Schmidt, who also saw the creature. The two men said that the creature had "two horns" protruding from the top of its head. It is interesting to note that in several of the sightings of the creature in Loch Ness, two horns on top or the head have been mentioned.

August: Sam McDonald and Ed Bell of Kelowna were fishing in a small boat off Kelowna Yacht Club when Naitaka surfaced for a few moments no more than a hundred yards away.

December: Roy Patterson MacLean, publisher of the Kelowna Courier who had spent twelve years in Kelowna hoping to see Naitaka, got his wish when feeding ducks by the side of the lake. Several humps surfaced only a few yards away from him, frightening the ducks, which flew away. The humps than made a right angle turn, made off into deeper water, and than sank.

February 1970: On the 22nd at about 3 p.m. strollers along the lake front through Kelowna's City Park saw Naitaka on the lake surface not far offshore. Between twelve and twenty people were involved.

May: Martin and Jo Ann Firstenburg and their brother and sister-in-law Greg and Dineta Firstenburg saw Naitaka from their boat. They described it as a "silver green thing moving fast through the water." A few days after the Firstenburg sighting, Mrs. Andrew Boychuk was steering their family houseboat on the same stretch of water but nearer to Green Bay, with her guests Mrs. Peter Swetz, both of Kelowna. Naitaka surfaced fifty feet from their boat, and both women noticed what appeared to be a pair of horns on top of its head. The two women yelled to their husbands at which point the lake monster dived out of sight.

June: Four Westbank people saw Naitaka swimming South of Squally Point at 8:55 p.m. on the 14th. They were Rubin Repp, Helmet Neufeld, Bill Long and Brenda Lind. At 8:45 p.m. on the 23rd four teenage girls from Knox Mountain, Kelowna watched a surfaced Naitaka for about five minutes. They refused to give their names to the press in fear of ridicule.

July: On the 10th, Barry Chapman and Richard Lockie of Summerland saw what appeared to be an upturned boat moving around the fish hatchery. When they sailed their boat closer, the upturned boat made off at speed and then sank.

July 1970: On the 20th, two recent graduates from school, Eva Menu and Chris Swayze were going fishing when they noticed waves and wakes on the lake, with no boat in sight. At 7:15 p.m. Naitaka surfaced for a few seconds in front of the wakes and than dived out of sight. This was close to Kelowna.

August: On the 21st, at 11:30 a.m. an unidentified woman flagged down Ken Charlish as he was driving along the lakeside road in Westbank, to drove his attention to Naitaka, moving around on the surface less than fifty yards offshore. They both watched the creature for about five minutes, until a water skier's outboard motor was started nearby, at which point Naitaka vanished under the surface.

October: Two boys feeding seagulls at 10:15 a.m. Scott Dowle and Jerry Branson, both of Kelowna, saw Naitaka surface. What they saw was presumably the creature's head, because they described a "stump rising up out of the water."

November: Two forteen year old girls, breathless and frightened told the "Courier" staff that Naitaka had followed their rowboat around in circles South of Kelowna Bridge. This was at 1 p.m. on the 1st of the month and the two girls had the creature in sight for almost ten minutes.

May 1971: Non believer Joe Davignon was quietly fishing off the West end of Kelowna bridge when to his astonishment, Naitaka surfaced less than fifty yards away and was in sight for ten minutes.

August: Naitaka appeared for the second time for Mrs. Blanche Inglis of Summerland, and her guests Mr. & Mrs. Scott Young from Calgary Alberta.

April 28th 1973: A half hour T.V. show on Naitaka and Nessie was broadcast in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Viewers jammed the T.V. station switchboard for three hours. (such was the interest shown).

April 29th 1974: Once again the fish hatchery at Summerland was visited by Naitaka. It was seen by Dr. Wilf Evans from his home beside the lake. His daughter Claudia and house guests Mr. & Mrs. Ed Robinson also saw the creature. It was at this point that Dr. Evans admitted that he had had five previous sightings of Naitaka, all in 1966.
