By the end of Stage 1 a learner is aware of print in environment: signs on public transportation, in public offices, places of business and restaurants, although cannot read many of them. Learner is able to recognize some words based on graphic features, such as first letter.

At this stage a learner:

Conceptual

  • has made connection between oral language and print
  • understands that print conveys meaning
  • understands value placed on reading and writing in this society, e.g. for employment purposes, reading letters from government, etc.

Decoding

  • identifies shapes
  • recognizes symbols
  • understands letter~sound correspondence
  • knows and names all the letters of the alphabet
  • recognizes own name in written form
  • recognizes common symbols, e.g. washroom, no smoking

Conventions

  • knows left-right, top-bottom directionality

Classifying

  • distinguishes same and different shapes, letters
  • matches shapes, letters

Text Types and Styles

  • understands print has different forms for different purposes
  • has some knowledge of organization of books and print conventions

Comprehension

  • asks and answers simple "who, what, where, when, why and how" of text read by others

Reading Strategies

  • guesses words through recognition of first letter or other feature uses context (e.g. illustrations) or other clues to guess meaning

Metacognitive Strategies

  • thinks about how he learns outside classroom environment and how to transfer those skills to classroom
  • monitors own comprehension, employing a strategy such as asking instructor question to aid comprehension
