Habitat Hypotheses Activity

What do you know about how things
work together in the river?

Match these "if-then" statments to make hypotheses about the interrelationships in the river. Draw lines which connect the "if" statements with all possible "then" statements. You should be able to see how the many elements of salmon habitat are connected. Do the connections you hypothesized make sense? Why?

If the river is too polluted then the salmon eggs cannot not hatch.
If the river floods then the salmon cannot survive.
If there is a drought then the salmon cannot spawn.
If the temperature of
the river gets too warm
then the water gets too warm.
If there is no vegetation
along the river banks
then the salmon cannot get enough oxygen.

Now finish these hypotheses yourself:

  1. If there is a log jam in the river then...
  2. If there is heavy weed growth then...
  3. If there is a dam on the river then...
