Practice Mapping Activity
The Island of Skylde

  1. Produce a map from the written description of the island of Skylde. Be sure to include a legend.

The island of Skylde takes the shape of a P, with the widest part being 40 kms; the narrowest being 10 kms. It is 75 kms long. Running north and south along the spine of the P are the Flint mountains.

A road network basically follows the coastline. Vane is the main town, a port in the southeast where the body of the P meets the spine. It is famous for its interesting cathedal. Keld is 15 kms south and is located at the major and only junction in the road network. Thwaite is a fishing port in the northeast corner of the island.

To the south of Skylde is a smaller island which can be reached by ferry. It is approximately rectangular in shape (the length being in the N-S direction) and has a small village, Moss, on the northern shore which acts as the ferry terminus. A single road runs N-S from Moss to Yocken on the south coast.

  2. Discuss. What details or information is important to recognize when mapping? What details did you forget to include? Compare your map with a classmate and note the differences.
