Moving
Downstream
By Damien Barstead
As the weekend draws near, another transition in the Haig-Brown Kingfisher Creek
Project is underway. Until now, the smaller of the two excavators has been working its way
upstream digging a new stream channel through a forested area adjacent to the wetlands near
Campbellton Elementary. As of yesterday around noon, the excavator completed digging to the
16th Street access. This signals that the top end of this section is done, and that it is time for the
two excavators to be reunited further downstream.
As the excavators and labourers complete the basic
construction of this section of stream channel, the similarities to a naturally meandering
stream are already visible.
Now work will begin on the lower portion of the stream segment, which runs from it future
confluence with Haig-Brown Kingfisher Creek’s West branch, upstream towards the old
culvert under Campbellton Elementary (future site of the overflow structure). This section
measures about 170 meters and, currently, has many striking similarities to a dirt road.

However, most of the final surveying has been completed, and digging is now
underway!
The final surveying of the lowest reach of the new
stream channel. About 150m will be dug in the next few days.
Project Manager Joyce Pielou hopes that the initial digging of this segment will be
completed today, however, she conceded to the suggestion that it may take until the beginning of
next week.
Regardless of this minor time issue, the progress that is being made is actually quite
astonishing given the incredible amount of care that is required, in this low gradient terrain, to
maintain accurate stream depths.
Visit the Creekside News next week to find out just how much progress has been
made on this section.
