Profiles on
Parade: Marcy Prior
By Damien Barstead
Marcy Prior has been involved with the Haig-Browns for many years. Although she
has sat on the Haig-Brown Kingfisher Creek Implementation Committee for only 3 years, she
has been the Haig-Brown
property gardener for many more. Working for Ann Haig-Brown for six years, then continuing
on as the property’s gardener, led her to form strong connections with the Haig-Brown
Kingfisher Creek Society. Eventually, Van Egan asked her to become involved in the project. In
light of her previous involvement with environmental organizations, such as Georgia Strait
Alliance, Quadra Island Salmon Enhancement Society, and Friends of Strathcona Park, it was a
natural move to involve her in the project. Moreover, Marcy’s long term residence (32 years) in
the Oyster River Area, and her participation on the Board of Directors for the Society have also
added to her qualifications.
Marcy, in her position as the Vice President of the Haig-Brown Kingfisher Creek
Implementation Committee, brings a very practical and down to earth attitude to the Board.
Marcy has a qualified perspective on what is best for the creek ecologically, due to her
horticulture background and her knowledge and familiarity with the Haig-Browns and the
property.

Her approach to dealing with issues is one of discretion. Fellow board members
value her opinions because they say that she carefully considers her opinions and information.
This, combined with her respectable reputation, states fellow board members, makes her input
consistently relevant and meaningful.
Over the last few years, Marcy’s honest and sincere personality has proven helpful
to the Haig-Brown Kingfisher Creek Society many times over, by contributing valuable advice
and a strong pertinent voice on the Society’s board.
