The Second
World War
The outbreak of the
Second World War in September, 1939 ended the second wave of Ukrainian
immigration to Canada. Along with England and France, Canada became an
ally of Poland against Nazi Germany. As a result of the Nazi-Soviet
Pact of August, 1939, Western Ukraine was occupied by the Soviet Union
producing a wave of refugees fleeing to central and western Europe then
under Nazi German administration. The uncertain and tragic developments
of the military and political situation in Ukraine obliged many Ukrainian
Canadians to take an active interest in the conduct of the Second World
War. The Canadian federal government also became interested in the internal
developments in the Ukrainian community, and suspecting the left-wing organizations
of disloyalty, banned their organizations and interned their leadership
