The Officers and Men of the NWMP

Originally organized by Order in Council, and later by an Act of Parliament, the officers
and men of the North West Mounted Police helped bring law and order to the early city
and surrounding area.
The officers of the NWMP were also ex-officio justices of the peace. These officers, together
with an other, could discharge the powers of a magistrate. This enabled the officers to
prosecute and judge apprehended criminals far from city court rooms. This power enabled
the officers to enact swift justice within the sparsely populated territory.

The original officers of the NWMP were recruited from Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes.
