The Headquarters of the NWMP, Barracks and Training Grounds

A Metis uprising at Batoche, the harassment and murder of Aboriginal peoples by
ruthless American traders and the ever present danger of annexation by the
United States led Prime Minister Sir. John A. Macdonald to form a mounted police
force to preserve the peace, prevent crime and apprehend criminals.

Formed by an Act of Parliament in May of 1873, the North West Mounted Police
established its headquarters in Regina in 1882. In present day the site of the
original grounds is home to the Training Depot and F Division for the Royal
Canadian Mounted Police.
