Walrus: now extinct on Sable

Walrus skull

Odobenus rosmarus

Skulls like this are occasionally washed out of the sand on West Spit after a storm.

Walrus bred on Sable from the end of the Ice Age until the 1600's. They were hunted for their oil and ivory tusks—400 tusks were taken in 1642. No walruses have lived on Sable since then. Hunting likely drove them to extinction on the Island.
