First Nations, Past and Present : Unit Evaluation

There are a variety of evaluation techniques that can be utilized. The Saskatchewan Education document, Student Evaluation: A Teacher Handbook (1991) can be located on the Internet from the hyperlinks below.  However, for the purposes of this unit the following evaluation procedures are suggested.

The purpose of checklists are used to observe and assess specific behaviors, skills or objectives for both teachers and students.  They offer systematic ways of organizing and collected information about a group of students or individual students.

Portfolios are used to assess student writing over a period of time. They are maintained by students and each folder includes all finished and unfinished pieces of writing.  Folders are an excellent way for students to see their own personal growth and development as writers.

Conferences are used to provide opportunities for focused, personal assessments of students writing or reading.  The teacher-student conference can be held to edit a piece of writing, discuss a project or share concerns or questions about the writing process.  Conferences can also be held with a group of students to assess the progress of that group or share concerns of the group.
