SUBJECT:   Physical Education

TOPIC:  Traditional Cree Handsignals

TIME FRAME:  2-3 Classes

COMMON ESSENTIAL LEARNINGS: Communication, Independent Learning, Personal Social Values and Skills, Critical and Creative Thinking.

MATERIALS:  none.

1.  OBJECTIVES:     Saskatchewan Physical Education Curriculum

Cognitive: Students will...

- discuss that First Nations people have developed language, traditions and technologies       appropriate for their lifestyles.

Physical:  Students will...

- behave in ways that are personally and social responsible in physical activity settings.
- practice their Cree handsignals.
- present their sentence to peers.

Affective/Spiritual:  Students will...

- respect the differences among people in physical activity settings.
- be aware that physical activity can provide enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, social interaction, work and leisure.

3. PURPOSE/TEACHER BACKGROUND INFORMATION: 

    The purpose of this lesson is to give students' an opportunity of how the Cree people traditionally communicated without speaking.  Students' will become familiar with how the Cree people communicated with the Europeans when they first arrived.

4. ACTIVITIES/IDEAS:

Research the website and have the students' practice a short sentence using the Cree handsignals.

After one or two days of practice, have the students' present their sentence to the class.   The students' can try to guess what the sentence is and what it represents.
