3.  PURPOSE/TEACHER BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

    The purpose of this lesson is to familiarize students about the different treaties that were made in Canada between 1871 and 1921.  Also to give students' an idea of why there are two different types of treaties.

The two different types of treaties:

a) Peace and Friendship Treaties - Treaties or agreements to keep the peace and to   maintain friendly relations.  Both the European nations and the Indian nations were accustomed to the concept of Peace and Friendship.  Peace and Friendship Treaties are know as pre-confederation treaties.  They were agreed to prior to 1867.

b) Land Cession Treaties
- Post-confederation treaties (after 1867).  In these treaties land was exchanged for money (annuities).  The numbered treaties are from 1871-1921 and are also know as Land Cession Treaties.

  4.  ACTIVITIES/IDEAS:

        Complete an internet research where students' locate treaties in Canada (other than Saskatchewan) and answer questions on the sheet.

 5.  EVALUATION:

Journal - students can keep a journal about what they are learning in the treaties
