LESSON #3     TREATIES IN SASKATCHEWAN

SUBJECT:  Language Arts/Social Studies

TOPIC:  Treaties in Saskatchewan

TIME FRAME:  4-5 classes

NOTE:  The language use of the information that is contained in this website is written at a high level.  It would be a good idea to have a parent or teacher associate work with the students' on the computer.

 3. PURPOSE/TEACHER BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

    The purpose of this lesson is to have students' identify and research the five treaties in Saskatchewan.

    The five treaties were signed:

    1874 - Treaty 4 The Qu Appelle Treaty

    1875 - Treaty 5 The Winnipeg Treaty

    1876 - Treaty 6 Fort Carlton and Fort Pitt

    1899 - Treaty 8

    1906 - Treaty 10.

4.  ACTIVITIES/IDEAS:

     Create small groups of 3-4 students', have them decide what treaty they would like to research.  Have the students' go onto the internet and find information about the treaty they have chosen.  (A research outline is given at the end of the lesson).  Depending on the size of the class, two groups can research the same treaty.  

     After the students' have researched their treaty content, they are to write a research report using the information they found.  Students' can then present their information to the class.  Maps, diagrams, copies of treaties and other visuals can be used to assist in the presentation.
