2. RESOURCES:

http://www.inac.gc.ca/treatdoc/index.html
http://collections.gc.ca/treaties/code
-Note:  There isn't any specific set of rules for  negotiating a treaty off of the internet, but one could explore the internet to compare the treaties.

3. PURPOSE/TEACHER BACKGROUND:

The purpose of this lesson is to give the students' an idea of how the treaties were negotiated.  The suggestions are those of the teacher who prepared this unit.

Some suggestions of how the rules of a treaty are made are:

    a) Treaties must be written.
    b) Treaties must be between two parties.
    c) Both parties must agree to terms and conditions.
    d) Treaties must be signed by both parties.

4. ACTIVITIES/IDEAS:

Divide the students' into groups of two and have them negotiate a treaty for something they want to exchange.  For example:  Two students' can negotiate a treaty for an eraser for a pencil.  On a piece of crumpled brown paper bag students' can write down the terms and conditions of their treaty.

Have small groups research on the internet and explore the treaties to find out if the rules apply to them.

5. EVALUATION:

Journal - before lesson begins ask students' to respond to the following question:
What do you think are some rules for making a treaty?
Portfolio - completed treaties
Discussion/Participation
Presentation - marking grid
