SUBJECT: Mathematics and Social Studies

TOPIC:  Math Fair

TIME FRAME: 1-2 classes

COMMON ESSENTIAL LEARNING'S:

Communication - Student’s will discuss among themselves the different results they obtain from the different activities they engaged in.

Numerical Literacy -  Students' will use their mathematical skills to solve and participate in the different math activities.

Creative and Critical Thinking - Students' will use information to classify and graph their results.

Independent Learning - Students' will collect data to be able to graph their results.

                    - 4 different colored sheets cut into different shapes

- use their fine motor skills by completing the different question sheets for the different math activities.

3. PURPOSE/TEACHER BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

The listed website gives examples of toys/games traditionally used by First Nations children.  These toys were fun and at the same time educational.  They helped the children develop life skills that they would have to use in the future as an adult such as accuracy.  For example, young men would practise their archery skills by shooting arrows at targets.  This developed their skill when it came to hunting.   The skins that they would get from the various animals would cover the Tipi,were used for clothes and bedding.  An example of this can be found in the game Hoop & Dart.

 

4. ACTIVITIES/IDEAS:

Math Fair - Develop five different math activities representing each of the five Math Strands from the Saskatchewan Education elementary math curriculum.  Ensure that the activities deal with the theme of First Nations dwelling's.  In the materials listed above, the teacher should be able to develop a range of math activities for the students to experience.
