Lesson 7#                                 Activity 7.1 : Building a Tipi

Guidelines for setting up a tipi :

When approaching a First Nation Elder always remember to offer tobacco.  This shows respect to the Elder.  The Elder will use the tobacco to offer prayers to the Creator.  It is believed that the tobacco smoke takes the prayers up to the Creator.   Explain to the Elder that you are planning to have your students build a tipi.   They will usually have information on where you can find a tipi that you could borrow or maybe rent.  Always approach an Elder weeks away from the date that you are planning to put up the Tipi.  This allows the Elder not to make plans and offer up prayers to the Creator on your behalf.  They will also need this time to think of a legend that will not offend Mother Earth and that can be told during the spring and summer months.
Asking an Elder will enhance the authenticity of building a tipi as Elders were always made part of the community.  They will also help in constructing the tipi.
