the completion of
the first stage of their building of a longhouse together.
Critical and Creative and Creative Thinking - Students' will have to find a
solution to the different problems
of constructing a longhouse.
Personal and Social Values - Students' will work harmoniously with members of their
group to accomplish the task.
MATERIALS: Books of the longhouse, pencils, worksheets, maps and pictures,
Popsicle sticks, glue, cardboard.

3. PURPOSE/TEACHER BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
The purpose of this lesson is to have students learn about the construction, design and
use of the longhouse. The Pacific Northwest peoples built longhouses as they lived
in a region that housed some of the largest trees in the world. Several families
lived in one longhouse at a time. Depending on the size of the longhouse, up
to a thousand people could live in one. The Pacific Northwest First Nation People were
located on the coast of British Columbia.
4. ACTIVITIES/IDEAS:
Research Project: Have the students' research different
websites to find out more information about the Pacific Northwest longhouses. In the resource section of this unit there are additional websites presented.
Building A Model longhouse - Using Popsicle sticks, have the
students build their own longhouse together in groups or individually.
