SUBJECT: Language Arts and Arts Education

TOPIC: Building an Igloo

TIME FRAME: 1-3 classes

COMMON ESSENTIAL LEARNING'S:

Communication
- Students' will discuss their assignment with one another.

 

MATERIALS:  Books of igloos, pencils, maps and pictures, sugar cubes icing sugar                             
                          glue and cardboard.

  provided.

- understand the the concept of the convenience the igloo provided in short duration's. For example,

- build an igloo using sugar cubes to work on their fine motor skills.

- appreciate the differences of the first Nation’s communities and understand their unique   
  cultures.

3. PURPOSE/TEACHER BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

Some people may believe that the Inuit live in igloos throughout the winter.  This is a myth as the igloos were only used if they were travelling and needed a place to sleep for the evening.  Some igloos were used longer if the First Nation peoples were hunting in a certain area.  Constructing an igloo did not take any time at all.

 

4. ACTIVITIES/IDEAS:

Constructing an Igloo out of sugar cubes -  Have the students' participate in groups or doing his as an individual activity.

Research Paper -  Have the students' research the uses of the igloo. When was it used, was it warm, how did they construct an igloo?
