Rationale The purpose of this unit is to familiarize students' with the different uses of plants; food-related, technical uses and medicinal uses. The grade five Saskatchewan Science Curriculum Guide's (1992) - explores Plant Structure and Function as a core unit in the program. It is also important for students' learn about traditional plant uses because before there were pop tarts and cookies, plants were a major food source for First Nations people. It is important for students to learn about contemporary plant uses because there are people who still utilize these plants today. Assessment of this unit will be based on portfolio of students' work, observation checklists, participation in large and small groups and anecdotal records.
