3.  PURPOSE/TEACHER BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

    The purpose of this lesson is to inform students' about traditional technical uses of plants.  Long ago and even today,  First Nation peoples utilized plants to help them with their everyday tasks.  It is important for students' to gain knowledge of the traditional uses of plants that First Nation peoples had due to two reasons: a) historically, First Nation peoples could only utilize what was within their surrounding environment, b) First Nation and Metis peoples continually have had a unique relationship with Mother Nature.  Examples that are specified in the proceeding website are: 

   a) common horsetail - used as an abrasive sand paper
   b) common snowberry - used in the construction of smoking pipes

 

4.  ACTIVITIES/IDEAS:

Researching the Internet for Information
*Divide students' into small groups and have them research the address given below to find information about the plants that are used for technical purposes.  There are 17 plants listed in this website.  Have the students' read through each plant description.  Once students' have finished reading each description, they are to choose three plants to research using the website.
