Today, much time is spent trying to heal our community from what was lost in the past. The Snuneymuxw people lost a lot when our children were taken from the community and put into residential schools. We also felt the devastating effects of European diseases and discrimination based on culture and colour.

After contact, our people lost faith and hope and many became dependent on alcohol and drugs and other addictive things. Today, the community is slowly gaining back what was lost by actively passing on the old teachings, traditions, cultural activities and a sense of the entire community's history.
