What is ahead for the Snuneymuxw people? Only time will tell. By surviving many obstacles and barriers they have shown the capabilities for survival. What will lie ahead will be determined only by them. The future cannot be seen but it will be realized every day by working toward a better knowledge and understanding of traditions. The culture is constantly changing, and with change comes the responsibilities of control and decision-making that will have lasting positive effects upon the Snuneymuxw peoples' future. Man unconsciously transforms objects and forms into symbols thus giving them power. They are powerful because man thinks they are powerful. The intertwined history of Snuneymuxw religion and art form is the record of symbols that were meaningful to them. As these symbols are reintroduced to the culture and understood, once again they will become powerful guides for the future.

Left is a carved spindle whorl. Although it had a practical function, it also served a special purpose in the spiritual sense and was revered as highly important to the Snuneymuxw people. |
