Jean-Marie Gay was born in Savoie, France, in 1830. He came to Nova Scotia in 1855 at the request of Archbishop Walsh. He was ordained priest by Archbishop Walsh and for thirteen years, Father Gay ministered to numerous parishes in Southwestern Nova Scotia including Sainte-Marie in Church Point and Saint-Michel in Wedgeport. Well liked by his parishioners, he was particularly concerned with the lack of educational opportunities for the young men under his pastoral care and much of the ground work for setting up the institution can be attributed to his relentless efforts. Gay died in July 1901.
