• Students may choose one of the following activities:

    1. Pretend you are a theatre critic for a newspaper. Choose a play and write a review about it or go see a play and write a review. (Note: It is always useful to spend some time reading theatre reviews first.)

    2. The Mysterious Case of Ambrose Small. Ambrose Small was a very successful Canadian theatrical producer and theatre owner in the early 1900's. Having built a small empire, he sold it for $1.75 million in 1919, then proceeded to vanish without a trace. The case was never solved and police finally closed the books on it in 1960. Make up a story about what may have happened to Ambrose Small, or a play on an unsolved mystery.

    3. Take the text of a Canadian play and sketch one or two of the following: Costumes for the main characters, set designs for the main scenes, important props used in the play.

    4. Write a short play (2-4 pages approx.).

    5. With the class, go and see a play of your choice. If possible, arrange a tour of the theatre itself. Try and meet the cast, director, technicians etc.

    6. Design a marketing/advertising campaign for an original show of your own making or an existing show like Phantom of the Opera, Crazy For You, Tommy or Les Misérables. Come up with a strategy outlining how the show is to be promoted and what media used. Then design and create the ads for the show.

    7. Turn a scene from your favourite television show into a one-act play. Don't forget to put in directions for actors and descriptions of the scenery.

    8. You are an actor trying to get a job in the theatre. Write a journal describing what you do to get a job and how you feel.

    9. Create a new scene design for a play of your choice. Why do you think your idea is appropriate for the play? What changes did you make from other designs created for this particular play?
