1. Choose a literary work such as Lord of the Rings, Gulliver's Travels, Alice Through the Looking Glass or Treasure Island and map the fantasy world described in the story. Make the map as detailed and colourful as possible. Include a legend and explanation of what the map represents.

    2. Put together a fictional newscast and have the members in the group write the news stories and then create maps that correspond to each story. Present the 'newscast' to the class (you may wish to actually videotape it on a 'news set' and let the class view the tape), then have a discussion based on one or more of the issues raised in the news stories.

    3. You are an early explorer such as a Viking. You roam the seas in search of new lands. At last, you discover a new continent. Create a giant mural that recreates the shoreline of this new discovery. Write a story to go with the mural. Display all the murals in class.

    4. Create an online map of your school or community. What are the areas of interest? How do you get from place to place? See if your town already has a website for you to look at. If there is, decide what you think is missing and see if you can add to it.

    5. Get the class to divide in groups and create treasure maps. They can lead to treasure buried or hidden around the school. Have the groups exchange their maps and have a contest to see who can find the treasure. Make sure that the difficulty levels of the maps are comparable
