Moose Unit Schedule
Rationale
This traditional moose unit was designed for the grade two classroom in order to teach our students about their culture and traditions. The reason for choosing a unit on moose came from the students and what their interests were. After doing the fish unit I realized that many of the students did not know much about the parts of fish in oji- cree or in syllabics. They also did not know much about the traditions of fishing or the legends. This moose unit will make the students more familiar with the traditions of hunting moose and the legends that go with the traditions. Through the elders the students should have a better understanding about moose hunting, know the parts of the moose in their own language, and find out how each part of the moose is used.
Overview This will be a very general unit about moose. Since the students do not know very much about moose or moose hunting we decided to cover this topic in a very general way. We will start with the elders telling the students about moose and moose hunting and the safety issues while hunting and preparing moose. Then the elders will go into how they used to hunt moose in the past and how moose are hunted today. The elders will also tell the students about their own hunting experiences. Once the students have an understanding about moose hunting then the elders will go into detail about the parts of the moose. The parts of the moose will be discussed in Island Lake Dialect and English and then the students will have to write the names in syllabics. When the students know the parts of the moose the elders will tell them what each part of the moose is used for. Hopefully at the end the students will have a chance to taste some of what they have been learning about. This is designed to take a week. Everyday that the elders are in the classroom they will tell the students a legend that deals with the moose. From this unit the students will develop a better understanding about moose and hunting them. The students will also learn a little more about their culture and traditions.
