Education:
Bachelor in Fine Arts, Concordia University; Major in Commercial
Art, Dawson College; studio courses at Bishop's University-Knowlton.
Career:
Cheryl
Long has been self-employed as a commercial artist for 15 years,
during which she has undertaken a wide range of different projects.
In the capacity of Illustrator and Art Director, she has produced
designs and illustrations for things such as packaging, dishes,
children's books and board games, corporate brochures, and pharmaceutical
print material, for a number of advertising agencies and commercial
art studios.
After moving to the Sutton area of Quebec four years ago, Cheryl
began to explore her creative potential free of the constraints
imposed by the commercial world. The natural environment inspired
her first to produce detailed watercolour and ink drawings, then
to explore larger canvases in an acrylic medium. Her subject matter
consists of, for the most part, trees, rocks, and forest. In the
last six months, she has begun to paint on location, within walking/hiking
distance to her home. This experience has been a personal renaissance
and become a great passion in her life, profoundly affecting her
relationship with nature, and the way that she records this in her
paintings.
An active participant of Tour-des-Arts (a local tour of artist's
studios) for the last three years, Cheryl has participated in various
group exhibitions including: the Art Sutton-Members Exhibition (1998,
2000); Maison Bruck-Gaia: A Woman's Art Show (as co-organizer
and exhibitor); and the Frederick Amsden House Contemporary Art
Gallery summer 2000 exhibition.
