Françoise
Sullivan (born in 1925) is a co-signatory of the Refus Global
(1948). The manifesto was supported by a group of artists in Montreal
who sought liberty from religious and academic authorities. Theirs
was a pursuit guided by passion for an art that was to be spontaneous,
unpredictable and compulsive. Sullivan contributed to the Refus
Global her 'declaration' on contemporary dance: "Dance
and Hope." She is well-known as a multi-media artist, poet
and dancer. During the 1940s she was active as a dancer in New York
and Montreal. Photographs of this period show her dancing in works
such as Black and Tan Fantasy (costumes designed by co-signatory
Jean-Paul Mousseau) and Dualité. Other photos show
her as a "Dancer in the Snow," in St. Hilaire, Québec.
In 1972, she wrote poems for Japanese books such as Spacial poem
No.1. No.4. More recent art includes abstract paintings of an
exquisite lushness of colour. Since 1977, she has been teaching
at Concordia University's Fine Arts Department in Montréal.
