This page contains five links taking you to more specific
information about birds. We are home to many species of birds due to the variety of
habitats such as saltwater marshes, coastal zones, mixed forests and tidal zones found in the
area. With hawks, eagles, herons, woodpeckers, loons, cormorants, gulls and a variety of
ducks we are a birder's paradise. If you are new to birding, please bear in mind
Claudia Wilds' code
of ethics from her book, Finding Birds in the National Capital Area,
as excerpted by the Nova Scotia Bird Society. Wilds states that you must make
the welfare and composure of the bird your main priority. Second, you must enter the
bird's habitat carefully, because the most fragile of foliage may be a food source for the
bird(s). Third, Wilds indicates that, if the bird and consequently its habitat are
located on private property, you should respect the owner's rights as well, and set a good precedent
for future visitations by you or any other birder. If you discover an extraordinary bird,
please advise the owner with regard to the possible consequences of the bird's location being
publicized.
