A biodiverse area is a geographical region that possesses a range of plant, animal and bird species. Different species require different habitat and for this reason range of habitat and bio-diversity are directly linked.

All areas are biologically diverse to some degree but few coast.jpg (19900 bytes)can boast the variations in habitat found in Digby and Annapolis Counties. In an area of 5,672 km2 one can find coastal cliffs, beeches, islands salt marshes, rocky shores, two mountain ranges, numerous glacier-formed lakes, streams, drumlands and bogs, as well as a fertile river valley. Both the Annapolis River and Bear River flow into the Annapolis Basin, creating tidal zones where fresh- and saltwater meet. The geology ranges from sand and silt stone to basalt and granite. All these factors combined in a relatively small geographical area give the region a host of distinct plants, animals and birds, making Digby and Annapolis Counties one of the most ecologically important areas in Canada.
