During the mid 1980's the public's environmental awareness and concern was heightened by the increased awareness of such things as acid rain and various industrial practices. As the public's environmental understanding grew pressure was placed on companies and governments to act responsibly and find new "green technologies" to supply power and deal with waste as well as implement practices which would promote the sustainable development of our natural industries.

It was needs such as this that led to the construction of the Fundy Tidal Power Station in 1984 and continues to today in such projects as the Bear River Solar Aquatics Treatment Facility. The Western Valley Development Authority is working to help communities identify alternative "green" solutions to current problems and practices. By helping to identify, attract and implement innovative solutions and companies the Western valley Development Authority is helping to protect the areas natural beauty and resources and ensure their survival in the future.
