When Johnny Ward's gold mining days were over he settled in Yale and became a freighter. He was a well-known figure for many years driving his teams along the old Cariboo Wagon Road from Yale to Barkerville. When the CPR put an end to freighting he went into the hotel business. One of his hotels used to stand across the tracks from the Church.
