Senate Committees
After the Governor General delivers the Speech from the Throne, the Senate
will appoint a nine-member Committee of Selection. This committee will nominate
the membership of the Senate Standing Committees.
Committees are at the core of the work in the Senate. They hold hearings in
Ottawa and across Canada to gather information on legislation they are studying
and policy issues that have been referred to them by the Senate. They
arrange for ministers, Government officials, organizations and
individual citizens to appear
before them. At the end of its study, a Committee submits its conclusions to the
Senate for consideration.
