Ministerial
Consultations with Minority Official Language Communities
Under
the Action Plan for Official Languages, released in March 2003, minority
official language communities will be formally consulted by Ministers with
official language responsibilities.
To
fulfil that commitment, the Official Languages Branch of the Privy Council
Office has established a cycle of consultations consisting of two annual
meetings with minority official language communities: one in the spring with
senior officials in departments involved in the implementation of the Action
Plan, and another in the fall with the Ministers of those institutions.
Five
consultations have been held to date: three with senior officials (May 2003,
March 2004 and March 2005) and two with Ministers (October 2003 and October
2005). Some sixty community
representatives and a dozen Ministers took part in the Ministerial Consultations
last fall.
These
consultations are a major event highly appreciated by communities. They afford
community representatives the opportunity to express their views on the
implementation of the Action Plan, and also allow federal Ministers to take the
pulse of communities on current issues in the area of official languages.
